Flagship Florals

The Alexandra Grecco team is truly one of many talents. Each week our team member, Samantha, gathers an array of flowers from New York’s Flower District. She is now proudly "a regular."
What is your first stop on floral days?
I love to start at 28th Street Wholesale - they source all of their goods from local farmers. It has been really gratifying to learn the seasonal rotations of flower and branch varieties. My wedding florist introduced me to this spot when we were sourcing options for my wedding a few years ago.
How did you start floral arranging?
I come from a deeply creative family (I'm Alex's sister) and I always felt like I didn't have a creative outlet for myself, until I found I loved to arrange flowers. This likely stems from our grandmother, Roberta - she taught me a lot about flowers and used to enter competitions for her arrangements, even well into her late 80's.
Alex and I both have an appreciation for fresh flowers and it was a dream to have new arrangements fill the flagship on a weekly basis. When we first opened the store Alex asked if I would put together some vases and then it started becoming a weekly ritual.
What flowers were on your custom Alexandra Grecco wedding gown?
Delphinium, roses, all the best. Also ladybugs!

What do you listen to when you are arranging?
I listen to a lot of instrumental music - classical, jazz, a good movie score. But I also love to dance around to Beyonce and Chappell Roan while arranging.
Do you have any tips and tricks to share?
1. Put pennies in your vase - the copper helps keep bacteria at bay. And remove any leaves or buds that would be below the water level.
2. Vary the height of your stems when arranging - I avoid having two of the same flower at the same height.
3. Don't be afraid to prune. It feels sacrilegious to cut away perfectly good flowers or leaves on stems, but if they're not fitting, it's okay to cut them back.
