Kira & Oliver

When Kira was 12 years old, she attended a production of Footloose with the St. Albert Children’s Theater in Alberta, starring a young actor named Oliver. She had no idea that in that moment, she was watching her future husband kick off his Sunday shoes

Fast forward 11 years later, Kira moved into a large house in downtown Toronto where a lot of actors would come and go, renting rooms on a temporary basis. After her first night in the new place, she went downstairs and ran into one of the mainstay tenants of the house, Oliver. Neither of them had any idea that our fates had crossed over a decade earlier, in their hometown. Oliver immediately asked her on a date, and the rest is history.

Kira and Oliver initially envisioned a big wedding in Toronto, where they currently reside, but ultimately, they embraced the serendipity of coming from the same hometown and chose to tie the knot there. Once they’d settled on a big white tent in the backyard of Oliver’s childhood home, they aimed for an intimate, elegant wedding with plenty of personal touches. Nearly every role was taken on by a family or friend - from their coordinator and officiant to the hair stylist, videographer, and servers.

Their ceremony took place in the middle of a breathtaking bed of flowers, cultivated by Oliver’s dad. They had live music, provided by Kira’s father, a brilliant jazz musician and his band, who serenaded their 60 guests during cocktail hour. Their food was made with love by Oliver’s high school friend, who prepared a family-style feast. For florals, Kira, her mom and sister hand-picked wildflowers from a beautiful farm to rearrange into bud vases. The pops of color complimented the minimal white tablescape.

To save some money, they spent months curating a playlist for our dance party, and were admittedly nervous that the energy might dwindle. However, Kira recalls standing on the sidelines around midnight, witnessing the most epic dance party and thinking, "Wow, we really pulled this off.” The wedding was such a team effort, and the love that they felt was truly overwhelming.

“I wanted to embody a timeless and classic look on my wedding day, with minimal makeup and a low bun. Rather than making a fashion statement, I wanted to feel like an elevated version of myself, a look I knew I'd appreciate 30 years down the road. When I tried on the Cleo Gown, I fell in love with it’s wide scoop neck and plunging back. It was simple, yet elegant and I felt like a million bucks.

I didn’t order it right away, because I wanted the chance to go shopping with my Mom and Sister while I was home for the holidays, but I couldn’t get it out of my head. After our day of shopping, I had tried on a couple more viable options and I was struggling to decide, feeling in my gut that I wanted Cleo, but agonizing over the enormity of the decision (I’m a Libra). Later that evening, as we were scrolling through potential bridesmaid dress options for my sister, I noticed that my 6 year old nephew had extremely strong fashion opinions… so I decided to get him to weigh in on my dress. He gave a hard no to every option except for Cleo, to which he said yup, that one. It was the perfect confirmation of what I already knew in my heart. Decision made - Cleo was the one!

I styled it with a pair of Jonathan Simkhai periwinkle blue pumps, snagged at an incredible deal just two weeks before the wedding, and an embroidered botanical veil from Ofrenda. I felt beautiful all day long and didn’t even bother to change into my second dress. The evening concluded with me swapping my heels for Converse sneakers and accidentally sitting in barbecue sauce in the backseat of our Chef’s car as we went on an epic hunt for McDonald’s. Fortunately, the dry-cleaners worked their magic, and my cherished gown looks good as new.
